At the lunch I had the extreme pleasure of meeting the Princess, a most charming woman,... I was very sorry that Marie was not with me to meet her; ... she likes women who can do things as well as look pretty and shine in society. But as it happened she was away that day making a memorable visit to the front and could not come to the lunch.

Marie was very anxious to visit the front, and while there was a good deal of hazard attending such an excursion, she was so much interested that it would have been a great disappointment to her not to go.
...
So taking with her some American friends then in Warsaw and my private secretary, ... she stared out on the morning of December 28 (1914).
...
Marie was gone all day and would have stayed at the front until after dark, for she wanted to see the flashing of the guns at night, but fortunately the chauffeur, intentionally or through carelessness, had failed to bring anything to light the lamps of the automobile and they were obliged to start home in time to get back before it became completely dark, and I was probably spared some hours of extreme anxiety. Marie had an exciting day and had much to tell of where she had been, what she had seen and what she had done. She had visited a field hospital where first aid was given to wounded from the front; she had gone to the trenches and seen what they were like - how they were occupied and how defended - she had seen advancing and retiring bodies of troops going to and returning from the trenches; she had gone to places where the ground was still strewn with military equipment which had been dropped or thrown away in the heat of action. At such places, or at one of them she had picked up a German helmet, a rifle, a soldier's belt and some smaller objects which she had brought back with her and still keeps as mementos of a most interesting day.

:)) Vive la France!
